Routine traffic stop nets $20,000 in cash, drugs

Durham police yesterday said a routine traffic stop in Beaverton has resulted in the seizure of over $20,000 in cash and drugs.

On April 4 at about 9:30 pm, a North Division officer on routine patrol stopped a vehicle believed to be driven by a suspended driver near Maple Beach Road and Garden Gate in Beaverton. He approached the female driver and detected a strong odour of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle, police said.

He ordered the female driver and a male passenger out of the vehicle, and during the investigation, the male passenger suddenly ran away. An officer gave chase, but the male was able to escape, police said.

Inside the vehicle, officers located over $6,300 in cash, about $14,150 in fentanyl and cocaine, along with cellphones and a weigh scale.

An arrest warrant is being sought for a 23-year-old Newmarket male. He will be charged with: Possess Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x3; Escape Lawful Custody of a Peace Officer; and Fail to Attend Court.

Anyone with new information about this incident is asked to contact Cst. Salmon of North Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 3807.
