Scugog home blast due to nearby propane tank

Township of Scugog yesterday said the explosion in a home on Fralick’s Beach Road was due to a propane tank.

“On Tuesday, June 9 Scugog Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call for a house fire and then subsequent explosion at a home on Fralick’s Beach Rd. The official cause of the fire is under the investigation of the Ontario Fire Marshall (OFM). Though the initial origin and cause of the fire is still being determined, the call was further complicated by the explosion of a nearby propane tank,” said an announcement.

Firefighters from across four services attended the scene to lend support. The fire was brought under control by the afternoon and staff remained on scene to monitor hot spots and flare ups while awaiting the OFM investigator.

While fighting the fire, three Scugog Firefighters received minor injuries at the scene and as a precaution, were taken to local area hospital and later released, the announcement said.

Both Mayor Drew and Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney are grateful to all the firefighters.

“Thank you to our incredible team of Firefighters. We are grateful that the three firefighters are safe and I wish them all a speedy recovery. Our Scugog firefighters are amazing and I am in awe of such bravery in the face of danger. We are truly grateful and thank you for your care and dedication to our community and fire protection services,” said Mayor Bobbie Drew.

Fire Chief Mark Berney conveyed his thanks, “Thank you to the Scugog team for their response and action. Also thank you for the support from our neighbouring services, Uxbridge, Clarington, and Kawartha Lakes Fire and Emergency Services. As well, thank you to our community safety partners Durham Regional Police and Durham Region Paramedics Services.”

The fire was extinguished and the scene is currently under investigation by the OFM.
