Second arrest in rental fraud on 55 victims

A second male is facing charges in relation to a rental fraud investigation in Oshawa.

In May 2022, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) began an investigation into a male suspect, who, between September 2021 to May 2023, allegedly posted ads on marketplace advertising apartments for rent in London, Ontario, according to police.

After taking first and last month’s rent from the victims, the suspect would cease all communications, police said.

On May 14, 2023, the suspect was located and taken into custody, according to police.

Through further investigation, investigators determined a second male was involved in the alleged laundering of over $76,000 from a total of 55 victims, police said.

On Tuesday, January 28, the second suspect was taken into custody, according to police.

A 26-year-old male from Scarborough was charged and released on an undertaking.
