Speeding unabated despite winter storm appeals

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday warned Durham drivers to avoid travel if they can due to the forecasted winter storm.

Environment Canada too warned of more snow till morning, and again, later Thursday afternoon saying it may make driving and walking difficult.

“With deteriorating weather conditions, we would like to remind motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. If you do have to go out onto the roadways, make sure your car is cleared of snow and ice and take it slow,” said the DRPS.

Environment Canada said snow or any wintry mix will taper off Thursday morning to patchy freezing drizzle. Another wintry mix of precipitation is possible Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” it advised.

Speeding unabated

But snow or no snow, warning or no warning, speeding seems to have continued unabated on Durham roads.

DRPS North Division officers reported these drivers (below) who were caught speeding in Brock.

They included a G2 driver with a two-year-old passenger.

The motorist was charged for stunt driving – speeding 51kmh above the speed limit, given a 30-days licence suspension, and 14-day vehicle impound.

DRPS East Division officers too clocked a driver doing 118kmh in a posted 80-zone near Enfield Road and Clarington Concession Road 7.

It is a danger for all on the road. Slow down, they said.

The driver, who was 38kmh over was fined $238 and awarded four demerit points.

Meanwhile, DRPS Central West Division reported that lights at Lakeridge Road North and Taunton Road East were out due to motor vehicle collision.

“Please treat the intersection as a four-way stop, they advised drivers.
