Squirrel causes power outage in Oshawa

Oshawa Power was kept busy yesterday by several outages across the city – including one caused by a squirrel – and with the installation of a 100,000 pound transformer.

But, by the end of the day, it successfully completed all its tasks and its day staff went home for a much-deserved rest.

Power is now restored to all affected customers, said Oshawa Power. “We do apologize for this inconvenience, especially for those working and studying from home. We will investigate the root cause to prevent it from happening again. Thank you for your patience, we appreciate your support.”

Early in the day, Oshawa Power said: “We are dealing with a small outage today caused by a squirrel contact in the Ritson Rd S area. Crews are onsite and expect to have power restored by 9am. We understand how critical it is to have uninterrupted service, at this time especially, we do apologize for the inconvenience.”

Then, there was a power outage affecting 112 customers in Northeast Oshawa.

Another power outage affecting 95 customers was reported in Northwest Oshawa.

yet another one was in Southeast Oshawa affecting 138 customers.

But the big one was the outage affecting 3,485 customers. “We are aware and have dispatched crews. Our crews will identify the cause and restore as soon as they can. We apologize for this inconvenience, current estimated time of restoration is 4pm. More updates to follow,” said Oshawa Power.

The biggest job, in terms of size, was the installation of a 100,000 pound transformer.

“Today we are changing out a 100,000 lb transformer at MS10. The new transformer increases the safety and reliability of the electricity supply in Oshawa. Please use caution if you are in the Keewatin and King St area as our crews work to complete this project,”said an Oshawa Power tweet.
