Teen driving wrong way causes multiple-car crash

An Uxbridge teenager driving the wrong way on a one-way street in Oshawa caused a multi-vehicle collision on Thursday, but no one was seriously injured.

On January 2 at 5:35 pm, an 18-year-old male was driving northbound on Park Road in Oshawa when he claims his GPS advised him to turn left onto King Street West. This is a one-way, multi-lane roadway for eastbound traffic only, said a police media release.

Vehicles driving eastbound on King Street saw the vehicle coming right at them in the northernmost lane. An eastbound Ford pickup in the northernmost lane honked his horn and flashed his lights, to no avail. The 38-year-old driver of the pickup then veered quickly to the right to avoid a head on collision, striking an eastbound white GMC Terrain SUV travelling beside him. The Terrain then lost control and flipped onto its side, trapping its 83-year-old female driver, the release said.

Emergency services arrived and were able to get her out of the vehicle. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Everyone involved in the incident remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Dylan Murphy, age 18, of Uxbridge, was charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
