Three duped 75-year old grandparent out of $30,000

Three male suspects are facing fraud-related charges following a grandparent scam that occurred last week, said Durham Police.

On March 23 the 75-year-old victim, a resident of Durham Region, received a call from a suspect who claimed to be a lawyer for his son. The suspect stated that the victim’s son was involved in a car accident and needed $30,000 to release him from prison. The victim released the money and after realized that he was defrauded. He contacted police.

On Monday, March 28, the suspect called the victim again and asked him to provide another $20,000. Members of our Financial Crimes Unit with the assistance of our Robbery Unit and K-9 Unit intercepted the suspects. Three parties who were in a newer Hyundai SUV were taken into custody.

They were all released on Undertakings. Names and further details are available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Chapman of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5352.

DRPS would like to remind residents who receive any unanticipated requests for money to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member or trusted advisor for support.
