Update: One in custody after hours of schools lockdown

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday lifted the Hold-and-Secures at three schools in Oshawa after several tense hours.

It is understood an armed person had barricaded self in the area.

“The situation on Highland Avenue has been deemed safe. One person is in custody. Thanks for everyone’s patience. This investigation is still ongoing,” said a police tweet.

No further details were released till late last night.

Durham District School Board (DDSB) also announced that it had been advised by DRPS that the ‘Hold-and-Secure’ order had been lifted.

DDSB yesterday morning had to place three schools in lockdown in the area of Olive Avenue and Wilson Road in Oshawa.

The schools were:

  • Clara Hughes Public School;
  • St. Hedwig Catholic School; and
  • David Bouchard Public School.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) said the lockdown was because of an armed/barricaded investigation to protect members who are working to resolve this incident safely. It had asked pedestrians stay clear of this area until the situation was resolved.

Earlier, DDSB said an incident took place in the neighbourhood near Roland Michener Public School early yesterday morning. “DRPS has informed us that this incident was isolated. The school is open and students are safe. Families may notice DRPS presence in the area as the investigation continues.”

It said we would like to remind parents that they can view marks, comments, and learning skills by logging into the Parent Portal.  Thank you for your continued patience.
