G1 driver charged for driving unaccompanied on closed highway

Durham Police yesterday said they had charged a 18-year old G1 female driver for driving on a closed regional highway unaccompanied, and then driving off when stopped by police.

In the evening of November 9, officers were at the scene at the intersection of Kerrison Drive and Salem Road for a single vehicle collision into a hydro pole resulting in the traffic lights not working at the intersection, explained a police statement. The intersection was blocked off by officers due to live, hanging wires. They had their cruiser lights on and were highly visible. Hundreds of vehicles obeyed the closure, yet two vehicles drove around the barrier and onto the closed road.

A 35 year old male from Ajax that was watching music videos on a mounted digital display is charged with driving on closed highway and driving with a display screen visible to driver.

While serving the man, a black SUV drove around the pylons and police cars. The female driver was stopped by the officer who advised her to wait while he finished with the first violator. She initially complied, however as the officer turned his back, she drove away from the stop.

Another officer from the scene stopped the 18-year old from Ajax who was charged with driving on a closed highway, careless driving, disobey officer directing traffic, failed to surrender license, and class G1 license holder unaccompanied by qualified driver. The owner of the car came to retrieve the car and the driver, police said.
