Two people rescued after falling through lake ice

DRPS Traffic Services on Sunday night said three people had fallen through the ice into Lake Scugog.

However, yesterday, Durham Police said two people had fallen through.

Both persons were safe, they added.

“DRPS Marine Unit would like to remind our community to stay off the ice as it is not safe. [Three] 3 people fell through the ice up on Lake Scugog. Thanks to the efforts of North Division Officers, these parties were rescued and treated at a local hospital. Don’t let this be you,” said the DRPS Traffic Services alert.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said, on Sunday, officers from North Division were called to Lake Scugog for two parties who had fallen through the ice.

“Fortunately, first responders, including DRPS officers were able to assist the parties who made it back to shore safely.”

No further details were released.

DRPS is reminding the public that many lakes and streams and water reservoirs are not completely frozen and are not safe to travel on even with some recent cold weather.

Police pointed out that Durham Region has three large bodies of water: Lake Ontario, Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe. All three have unique ice characteristics, freeze and thaw at different times in different locations and can be very unpredictable.

“Remember, no ice or body of water is ever entirely safe. Anyone enjoying recreational activities near a body of water must make their personal safety a top priority. Remember to make smart, educated choices about water safety. This can greatly reduce the possibility of accidents that put both you and responding emergency services personnel in danger,’ DRPS said.

It gave the following safety tips that can help keep you safe:

  1. Know the condition of the ice before you go out and take into consideration the recent changes the weather may have had.
  2. Never go out on the ice alone.
  3. Tell someone your plans, where you are going and what time you are expected back.
  4. Be prepared with an emergency kit.
