Umbrella Alert: Up to 30mm rainfall expected

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) has issued an advisory for hazardous creek conditions following projections of 10-30mm rainfall.

This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Monday March 21st, 2022 or until further notice.

It said the Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) of the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, is tracking a low-pressure system set to move into the Cloca watershed late last night. The system is expected to bring rainfall in the amount of 10-30mm.

“As a result of the recent warm temperatures, the snow pack had begun to melt and cause moderate runoff. The forecasted rainfall will increase runoff where little snow cover exists, and continue the melt of the remaining snow pack. This will result in higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams. In addition, melting ice and snow may contribute to ice jams and blockages, especially at bridges and culverts, which may lead to localized flooding. Widespread flooding is not anticipated , however fast flowing water and flooding of low lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood prone areas,” said a Cloca statement.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. “Please remind children of these dangers,” it added.
