Housing Durham has announced the doubling of the capacity of a seniors building in the Town of Whitby.
The community housing redevelopment project at 409 Centre Street in Whitby, will replace an outdated two-storey, 16-unit seniors building with a new three-storey, 32-unit building, said a statement.
The anticipated construction is scheduled for 2026, it added.
The region will be in contact with current tenants of the redevelopment site, to ensure they are given alternate housing well in advance of any revitalization work. Existing tenants will be given priority for newly designed and finished units.
Housing Durham is hosting a drop-in open house to share updates on November 17 at 4pm to 6pm at the Centennial Building (416 Centre Street South, Whitby).
Housing Durham redevelops properties to:
- Provide people with more high quality affordable housing.
- Create mixed income communities, with a mix of new market rentals and rent-geared-to-income homes.
