Environment Canada has issued a warning for entirety of the Durham Region to be on guard for severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
Watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of damaging thunderstorms.
The conditions that are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms are:
- Wind gusts near 100 km/h.
- Toonie sized hail.
- Heavy rain in excess of 60 mm.
Environment Canada is also warning that local utility outages are possible. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.
Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Residents are being asked to secure loose objects.
