Whitby announces date for Fieldgate complex opening

The Town of Whitby yesterday announced that construction of the the Fieldgate Sports Complex has entered the final phase and that the town is preparing to welcome residents this fall.

The celebratory opening of the town’s most significant recreation project to date, will be held on Saturday, September 12, said a town statement.

The free community event will feature family activities, community partner displays, and opportunities to experience the complex’s indoor and outdoor amenities. Additional event details will be shared in the coming months as final construction and preparations continue ahead of opening, said the statement.

Once complete, the Fieldgate Sports Complex, will serve as a hub for recreation, sport, wellness, and community connection for generations to come, it added.

“The Fieldgate Sports Complex is more than a recreation facility — it’s a reflection of our community’s vision for the future. Delivering this facility is one of the 62 action items in Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan and it’s so exciting to see it come to life. Whitby residents and local sports organizations helped shape this project from the very beginning, and on September 12 we will celebrate a place that was truly built by the community, for the community,” said Mayor Elizabeth Roy.

  • The facility is located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407.
  • Amenities include a twin-pad arena, an aquatics centre, a double gymnasium with a walking track, community and program spaces, and a range of outdoor amenities, including a sports field, pickleball and tennis courts, basketball courts, a skatepark, a pump track, and a playground.
  • Final commissioning, equipment installation, staff training, and site preparations will continue through the summer ahead of the opening celebration on September 12.
