Whitby to begin harbour dredging this November

The Town of Whitby will begin its biennial removal of built-up sediment in the Whitby Harbour this November – a process called dredging.

Each year, hundreds of tons of silt and sediment flow into the Whitby Harbour from Pringle Creek, which if not removed can cause localized flooding or pose a safety risk to boaters. Through the dredging (or removing) of this material every second fall, the Town helps to prevent future flooding and maintain a safe water depth in the harbour for recreational boating and activities.

Preparation work for the proper containment of the removed sediment started mid-October at the Sediment Containment Facility (located on the west side of the Whitby Harbour).
