Ontario investing $85.7mn in four schools in Durham

Ontario Government yesterday announced it is investing $58.7 million for two new schools and one school expansion in Oshawa and $27 million for one new school in Clarington.

This will support the creation of 1,887 student spaces and 49 childcare spaces in Oshawa and Clarington, according to Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham.

These four projects are part of a $1.3 billion plan that more than doubles funding to build new schools and expansions, including childcare spaces, announced by Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

McCarthy said young students attending the new Northglen Catholic Elementary, Kedron #1 Catholic, and the Symington Avenue Public School will benefit as they learn in modern schools that get students back-to-basics with hands-on learning to be better prepared for the jobs of the future.

“This is great news for Clarington residents who have been eagerly anticipating this announcement. We look forward to seeing construction underway and the start of a new, thriving Catholic school community in Bowmanville,” said PVNC Catholic District School Board Chairperson and Clarington Trustee Kevin MacKenzie.

There has been a long-standing residents’ demand for a school in Newcastle, Clarington.

Monique Forster, Chair of the Durham Catholic District School Board, said: “The six-classroom addition to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School and new unnamed Catholic elementary school will allow us to address the population growth and continue to serve our students and families in north
Oshawa.”

Highlights of these projects include:

  • A $27.6 million investment in the Durham Catholic District School Board for a new Kedron #1 Catholic Elementary School to be located at a site to be acquired in Oshawa, creating 622 student spaces.
  • A $3.4 million investment in the Durham Catholic District School Board for an addition to the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School located at 1425 Coldstream Drive in Oshawa, creating 138 student spaces.
  • A $27.7 million investment in the Durham District School Board for a new Symington Ave and Steeplechase Street Public School to be located at Symington Avenue & Steeplechase Street in Oshawa, creating 634 student spaces.
  •  $27 million investment in the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board for a new Northglen Catholic Elementary School to be located at Middle Road & Northglen Blvd in Clarington, creating 493 student spaces and 49 childcare spaces.
