Whitby waterfront trail closure and detour announced

The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced a waterfront trail closure and detour in the Town of Whitby.

It said the closure will begin in the first week of May and last until summer 2024.

Pedestrian access to the current alignment of the Whitby Waterfront Trail next to the Whitby Water Supply Plant (WSP) will be detoured to the new alignment next to Water Street, said a regional statement.

It said the works are necessary to safely complete the construction of the Whitby Water Supply Plant (WSP) Raw Water Well Upgrade project. For more project details, please visit durham.ca/WhitbyWSP.

The region said residents will be required to choose alternate routes in accordance with the signed detour traffic routing and are asked to exercise additional caution for everyone’s safety. Access to the park and waterfront will be maintained whenever possible.

It said municipal construction projects include the use of equipment which may cause noticeable noise and vibration for nearby residents and businesses. The region realizes that the construction work will be disruptive and will make every effort to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, it added.
