Will Bowmanville GO train area be vibrant or crowded?

The area around the proposed Bowmanville GO train station (Bowmanville West Urban Centre) is filling up fast and will be a new major growth area in Clarington.

It will include a diversity of housing, shopping, and services, area residents were told during a Public Information Centre on Thursday, September 23.

The area around Green Road is already getting congested with new builds, with several now completed and occupied. More developments are on the way along the road (see related stories below). Further north, there are plans to extend Longworth Avenue to Green Road, where too, new developments are projected to come up. Residents have expressed concern over traffic snarls and other issues related to crowding in the area.

The Bowmanville West Urban Centre is being planned as the main concentration of commercial and mixed-use development in Clarington. It will include a diversity of housing, shopping, and services, along with new open spaces and boulevards. Walkable streets and sustainable design will create a vibrant neighbourhood where young families and older adults will enjoy living and working side by side. Improved cycling and pedestrian opportunities will provide better connections to the rest of the community, said a municipal statement.

The new GO train station and the related transit-oriented development (TOD), are key drivers of change for this area, it said.

In anticipation of the GO train extension, Clarington is developing a high-level vision for the transportation hubs around the future Courtice and Bowmanville GO stations. The municipality wants to ensure that development around the future stations is adequately planned, so these areas are more than just train stations; they also become destinations.
