1.2mn homes to be powered by Darlington small reactors

The addition of three small modular reactors (SMR) at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, will result in capacity to power 1.2 million homes.

“Before today, this project would have delivered enough electricity to power 300,000 homes. With this announcement, a fleet of SMRs in Clarington will create enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster following the Government of Ontario and Ontario Power Generation(OPG) announcement of plans to build three additional SMRs at Darlington.

Work has been underway for years to build Canada’s first SMR at Darlington. Expanding the project from one reactor to four will do even more to build a reliable, affordable, and clean electricity supply and attract more investment in our local economy, Foster added.

Subject to Ontario Government and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulatory approvals on construction, the additional SMRs could come online between 2034 and 2036. This timing would allow Ontario Power Generation to apply learnings from the construction of the first unit to deliver cost savings on subsequent units. Building multiple units will also allow common infrastructure such as cooling water intake, transmission connection and control room to be utilized by all four units instead of just one, reducing costs even further.
