The Municipality of Clarington told Durham Post that the approved total funding for the new South Bowmanville Recreation Centre is just over $100 million.
Phase 1 approved funding was roughly $65 million while Phase 2 approved funding was roughly $37 million, said a municipal spokesperson.
Work on Phase 1 of the long-awaited community project started on May 1. Phase 1 is expected to open in 2026.
Following Phase 1, construction on Phase 2 will begin. The municipality said it currently working on developing that timeline.
According to the municipality, Phase 1 will include:
- A FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with an indoor walking track
- Two FIBA-sized basketball courts, adaptable for net sports such as pickleball, tennis, and volleyball
- A refrigerated outdoor skating trail designed for year-round programming, including summer events
- Multi-purpose rooms for activities such as yoga, strength training, and children’s programs
- The existing lacrosse bowl will remain on site
Phase 2 of the project will introduce a new aquatics centre to meet community demand and provide additional space for swimming and wellness programs. Future additions will also include more multi-purpose rooms to further enhance recreational offerings and strengthen community connections.
