Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has arrested one adult and four male youths following an armed robbery at a jewelry store in the Oshawa Centre.

The adult male, age 19, of Toronto (name available at www.drps.ca), and the four male youths were charged. They included a:

  • 13-year-old male from Whitby,

  • Two 17-year-old males from Toronto.

The suspects, three of whom were already on release orders, were apprehended after a pursuit that ended in Ajax. They included two young offenders who were facing prior robbery charges, police said.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday, October 8 at about 10:55 am. Central East Division officers responded to an armed robbery in progress at Paris Jewellers inside the Oshawa Centre (419 King Street West).

Four male suspects entered the store and used hammers and a pickaxe to smash display cases and steal jewelry. The suspects then fled the scene in a waiting SUV driven by a fifth individual.

Police successfully tracked the getaway vehicle along Highway 401 into Ajax, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers, with the assistance of the K9 Unit, quickly located and took all five suspects into custody. Fortunately, no store employees were physically injured during the incident.

The arrested individuals face multiple charges, and were held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with cellphone, dash cam, surveillance footage, or any information regarding this robbery is asked to contact Det. Kerr of the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355.
