15-year old accomplice stops victim from chasing phone thief

A male is facing charges following a cell phone theft investigation in Oshawa.

On Monday, March 23, around 9 pm, Central East Division officers responded to a robbery call in the area of Rossland Road East and Harmony Road North.

The victim had arranged to sell a cell phone through Facebook Marketplace. During the meeting, the suspect took the phone and ran. When the victim chased the suspect, a second suspect confronted him and made threats with a knife.

The victim did not suffer any physical injuries, police said.

Further investigation determined the second suspect was responsible for at least three other similar theft incidents.

On Friday, March 27, members of the East Crime Team, with the assistance of the Community Response Unit (CRU) located and arrested the second suspect in Oshawa.

Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at a nearby residence, and located the knife believed to have been used in the theft incidents.

The first suspect remains outstanding. A 15-year-old teen boy from Oshawa is charged.
