20 tickets issued for use of phone while driving

Road collisions – some times resulting in injuries and even fatalities, the reopening of schools and warnings over road safety, seem to have no effect as some Durham motorists who appear to be addicted to their phones – even while driving on the region’s busy roads.

No heed was paid to the announcement by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) that its officers would be getting tough with offenders during the school reopening week.

And, the result was the issue of 20 tickets at one location alone.

Great work by four officers from DRPS Central East Division who conducted a traffic enforcement initiative last week in the Simcoe and Rossland area, said a DRPS tweet adding that 20 tickets were issued for use of a handheld device and 7 cautions were given – 1 for drive with no license.

DRPS emphasized that: “Our officers will be out monitoring motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic as students begin their return to school…Drivers are reminded to slow down and pedestrians are asked to be aware of additional traffic and follow all traffic signals.”
