28 ticket issued during commercial vehicle blitz

Members of East Division, DRPS Traffic Services Branch and the Ministry of Transportation recently joined forces to conduct a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) initiative in Clarington.

Officers set up their inspection station in the parking lot of the Darlington Sports Centre in Hampton where they identified CMVs and trailers worthy of an inspection. They concentrated attention on Taunton Road and the adjacent streets in Hampton and Mitchell’s Corner, said the police.

Despite the rain and poor weather conditions, seven CMV inspections were conducted and four vehicles were taken out of service. Twenty-eight tickets were handed out for various infractions including securement, tire condition, trailer connection, speeding and suspended licenses. Six people were cautioned for various infractions.

There was also an education component to the initiative, as every driver and company representative present were educated on the violations found in their vehicles and given a CMV safety information pamphlet.

DRPS said it will continue these initiatives throughout the year to insure unsafe commercial vehicles are removed from the roads.

This campaign is part of the Durham Vision Zero traffic initiative in partnership with the Region of Durham. Through public opinion, collision statistics and trends, Durham Vision Zero identified commercial vehicles as one of the eight primary emphasis areas to be targeted in effort to attain their goal of reducing fatal and injury collisions over a five-year period.
