Since the first order was announced in January 2024, the Municipality of Clarington is moving to demolish another home on Bowmanville’s West Beach Road.
“Please be advised that beginning the week of October 26, 2026 weather permitting, Cardan Demolition and Excavation will begin demolition of the buildings at 48 West Beach Road in Bowmanville,” said a notice dated October 21.
Demolition is expected to take five days, said the notice from the municipality’s building operations department.
The notice has raised concerns on social media for the short time period given as also on transparency and safety issues.
But the notice said the buildings and utilities serving the site have been decommissioned, and the demolition will proceed in accordance with all applicable environmental, regulatory, and safety requirements.
The municipality said it acquired 48 West Beach Road in 2026.
It said the demolition is an important step in advancing the vision for the Bowmanville waterfront and improving public access to this valued community space for residents and visitors.
The Timeline
In July 2023, the municipality said Clarington Council voted to grant a five-year lease extension to December 31, 2028, to the original cottage tenants remaining at the beach.
At that time, the municipality said it will be reassuming two cottages when the existing leases expire later in 2023.
In January 2024, Clarington Council first ordered demolition of two vacated West Beach cottages in Bowmanville.
It said an inspection by municipal staff concluded that the cottages were unsafe for occupancy and would require extensive repairs to make them safe.

Clarington has an ambitious waterfront development plan as its shoreline stretches some 34 kilometres along Lake Ontario and spans Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle.
