6th Murder of 2023: 26-year old woman stabbed to death

Durham Police investigators from the homicide unit have taken over a stabbing investigation that has left one female dead and a second female with critical injuries.

On Sunday, March 12 at about 4 am, members of East Division responded to an address on Simcoe Street, Oshawa for reports of an armed person.

Police arrived on scene and located two adult females suffering from stab wounds. Both females were transported to Toronto-area trauma centres where one has succumbed to her injuries.   The second female remains in stable condition, said a police statement.

It said Katie Kainz, age 26, is the sixth victim of homicide in Durham Region in 2023.

Suspect information is not available. At this time this appears to be an isolated incident.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information or video footage, including dashcam and home surveillance, to please contact police.
