The Diane Hamre Recreation Complex, which was first closed on January 24th, continues to remain closed as it continues to serve as a temporary evacuation centre for residents of a local retirement home.
The closure follows a burst water pipe that required the evacuation of individuals from the facility, said a Clarington statement.
The Municipality of Clarington has announced that the complex will remain closed through Monday, January 27, with plans to reopen for all scheduled and drop-in programs on Tuesday, January 28.
Closure updates include:
- Friday, January 24: The facility was closed, and all scheduled and drop-in programs were canceled for Friday, January 24, and Saturday, January 25.
- Saturday, January 25: The closure was extended through Sunday, January 26.
- Sunday, January 26: The closure was further extended through Monday, January 27.
Clarington Emergency and Fire Services, in coordination with the Region of Durham, Durham Region Transit, and the Red Cross, facilitated the safe transportation and care of the evacuees. Officials confirmed that all individuals are safe.
Further updates on programming and reopening will be provided through Clarington’s website and social media once the evacuees have been relocated, the statement said.
