The Region of Durham has clarified that the proposed gondola project for Simcoe Stree in Oshawa was moved forward following public consultations.
It also said the estimated cost of Aerial Cable Car Transit (ACCT) project is just under $1.1 billion. It is proposed to run on Simcoe Street South from Lakeview Park to Durham College.
Councillor Brian Nicholson recently criticized the project (see below). “”In my view, it is better to spend limited funds on housing and support for those in need than build pipe dreams in the sky,” he said.
The region said the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Aerial Cable Car Transit, Light-Rail Transit (LRT), Monorail, Subway and High-Frequency Bus Services were all options explored during the initial phase of studies and public consultations.
“The Bus Rapid Transit and Aerial Cable Car Transit system were carried forward based on public consultations. The capital cost for a BRT option is $800 million, and just under $1.1 billion for a AACT option,” it said in a clarification issued to Durham Post.
The region also emphasized that in comparing high-level revenue numbers, looking at only fare revenue, the BRT is expected to generate $27.6 million, while the ACCT option is projected to generate $30.1 million. In comparing over a 60-year project life cycle, BRT has a net loss of $132 million and the ACCT option has a net profit of $828 million.
