Durham Region will enforce seasonal weight restrictions on designated roads starting March 1 to prevent damage caused by spring thawing.
These restrictions apply to vehicles exceeding 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.
According to regional officials, the restrictions will be in place from March 1 to April 30. The final day may be adjusted following periodic reviews of road and weather conditions.
Officials stated that signs will be placed on all Regional roads where weight restrictions apply. A complete map of affected roads is available at durham.ca/WeightRestrictions.
Purpose of the Restrictions
The region has indicated that these measures are in place to prevent road damage. During the spring thaw, frozen roads begin to soften, temporarily reducing their strength and making them unable to support vehicles exceeding 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.
Most public utility and emergency vehicles are exempt from the restrictions.
