Recycling Right: Bins don’t sort – you do!

It is not just about putting your litter in the bin; it is about recycling it right, says the city of Oshawa.

Recycling right when you are out in the community is just as important as when you are at home. However, despite best efforts, public space recycling programs can sometimes be confusing and materials end up too contaminated to be recycled and cost more to sort properly, said a city release.

New multi-stream waste and recycling units can be found inside and outside of Oshawa recreation facilities, and are designed to increase participation and reduce contamination. The new units use colour-coded text and images that make it easier to recycle right. Community members can clearly see how to sort their waste before placing it in one of the unit’s openings for paper, cans and bottles, waste and organics, it added.

When visiting the recreation facilities, pause and check to make sure you are placing items in the correct spot.

What’s better than recycling an item? Avoiding it in the first place. Oshawa encourages you to make the switch to a reusable cup or bottle when possible.
