This past weekend, police conducted RIDE checks across the Region of Durham, stopping 635 vehicles and charging two drivers with impaired driving offenses, according to the DRPS.

- 39 persons given a roadside breath test
- 2 people received seven-day suspensions for registering a warn
- 2 people charged with impaired driving offenses
DRPS is reminding residents that officers are on duty 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year, ensuring roadway safety and reducing impaired driving in Durham Region.
New Rules

The new impaired driving rules are in effect as of January 1, 2026. These new rules include the following changes:
A Warn (50–79 mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood) reading on an Approved Screening Device will result in:
- 7 day suspension for a first offense
- 14 day suspension for a second offense
- 30 day suspension for a third offense
- Mandatory remedial driver training and substance-use programs
will also apply.
The legal limit for alcohol consumption is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with an impaired driving criminal offense will have their driver’s license suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
