Ajax asking if alcohol can be served at more public places

The Town of Ajax Council has initiated a review of liquor service policies with consideration to potentially expanding the locations and manner in which alcohol is permitted.

It is inviting the community to share feedback through a public survey, open until January 22 on its Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP).

Nicole Cooper, Ajax Deputy Chief Administrative Officer said: “Through this survey, we want to ensure we gain a sense of how the community feels about expanding liquor service rules at town locations and events, and whether they should be more restrictive or more flexible. We appreciate the community’s feedback to help guide the town’s review and update of the policy.”

The policy ensures the town is providing safe and enjoyable municipal facilities and parks that promote the health and safety of participants, residents and staff, while allowing a responsible and managed approach to the consumption of alcohol in certain public spaces, said a town statement.

The MAP Survey asks residents their thoughts on temporary and perpetual liquor service at town locations and/or town events. Results will be presented to council in February.

Last updated in 2020, the current MAP permits the renters of town facilities to obtain a Special Occasion Permit (SOP) – a temporary permit/license to serve alcohol at their event, under the Liquor License Act – at spaces within the Ajax Community Centre, McLean Community Centre, Audley Recreation Centre, Town Hall, St. Francis Centre and the Quaker Meeting House.

The MAP permits temporary alcohol service, with a Special Occasion Permit, in parks and outdoor amenities under certain rules and conditions. This could include, for example, baseball tournaments, markets or community events.

The town’s only facility with a perpetual Liquor License is the St. Francis Centre.
