A humanitarian crisis is unfolding on our streets, according to Regional Councillor Willie Woo, Clarington’s representative to the Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM).
On Monday, December 2, Clarington’s General Government Committee supported the OBCM Solve the Crisis campaign.
“A humanitarian crisis is unfolding on our streets, and urgent action is needed to support those living unsheltered. Clarington stands with the Ontario Big City Mayors Solve the Crisis Campaign, urging provincial and dederal governments to take swift action on homelessness, mental health, and addiction,” said Regional Councillor Willie Woo.
Clarington Councillors have unanimously supported the call for:
- The province to appoint a dedicated minister and ministry with the necessary funding and authority to address housing needs and provide comprehensive mental health and addiction support.
- The provincial government to form a task force with broad sector representatives to create a Made in Ontario Action Plan, involving the federal government in the discussions.
- Both levels of government provide sustainable funding to support municipalities in helping individuals with mental health and addictions, including those who are unsheltered or from vulnerable populations.
Municipalities are at their limit. We need provincial and federal intervention, said a Clarington statement.
