A ‘Transit Mall’ in downtown Whitby?

One of the ideas that Whitby Council wants residents to have their say on is a proposal for a ‘Transit Mall’ in the downtown area.

The town is asking residents what do they think about closing a portion of Downtown Whitby to vehicular traffic to create the Transit Mall.

The Transit mall will be part of the Whitby Bus project by Metrolinx, which is seeking community engagement on the proposed design of a new rapid-transit bus route along Highway 2 (Dundas Street) through Whitby to connect Toronto (Ellesmere Road) and Oshawa.

This project will impact our residents and businesses. The town encourages you to share your thoughts with Metrolinx and let them know what you want to see from this project, said a town statement.
Metrolinx is hosting a public information session online running to Friday, December 18, 2020. Residents can share thoughts with Metrolinx on the proposed design through their website here.
Once this public information session closes, Metrolinx will review comments to fine-tune the design.  It will then host stakeholder meetings and another public information session early next year, along with an environmental assessment.
You can view a presentation Metrolinx made to Whitby Town Council in early November on the CivicWeb Portal here (Item 3.3).
