Ajax Council outraged by hate flyer found at schools

Ajax Council is outraged by the discovery of a disturbing hate flyer found at multiple schools and neighbourhoods across Ajax, according to town Mayor Shaun Collier.

Durham Police earlier announced that it is investigating a disturbing image and text (see below).

Mayor Collier said the flyer is intended to explicitly target and perpetuate harm to the Black community.

“The flyer uses dehumanizing anti-Black commentary and imagery and is a stark reminder of how prevalent hate, violence and racist actions are. We offer our sincere regrets to anyone hurt by this incident. Anti-Black racism is violence,” said Mayor Collier in a statement.

“We decry and bring attention to incidents of hatred to call out the alarming and disgusting conduct and to let impacted communities know that we stand in solidarity with them. We can and will do more to prevent racism in our town. It perpetuates trauma and intentionally targets and humiliates racialized communities,” he said.

Mayor Collier said anti-Black racism and all acts of hate, violence and discrimination have no place in our town.

DRPS is investigating this vile act, while town staff are on high alert. He urged anyone who knows the person or persons responsible to contact DRPS or Crimestoppers.

“Diversity is our strength. We strive to continually lead with these values and beliefs that enable our community to develop their potential, bring their full self to work and engage in a place of understanding, learning and inclusivity,” Mayor Collier added.
