Region announces area wide speed limit cut in Sunderland

The Regional Municipality of Durham and the Township of Brock yesterday announced they will be installing an area wide 40 kilometre per hour (kmh) posted speed limit in Sunderland.

Where: River Street (Regional Road 10), from Sunderland Meadows Drive to Highway 7/12, in Sunderland. The Township of Brock’s local roads in Sunderland will also be changed to an area wide 40 km/h speed limit, unless otherwise posted.

When: The speed limit reduction signs were scheduled to be installed on October 2. Unfavourable weather conditions may impact the installation schedule, the region said.

Why: The speed limit reduction aims to improve safety for all road users. Aggressive driving, including speeding, was identified as one of eight emphasis areas in Durham’s Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan, which aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate all fatalities and injuries caused by collisions, the region added.
