The Town of Ajax and Medallion Corporation are inviting residents and visitors to a special community meet and greet with hometown soccer star, Derek Cornelius, at the temporary Derek Cornelius Square.
Fresh off representing Team Canada on the international stage, Cornelius is returning home to thank the Ajax community for its unwavering support and to recognize the town’s tribute of temporarily renaming Pat Bayly Square in his honour.
Residents are invited to meet Cornelius on Sunday, July 19, from 10 am to 12 pm at Derek Cornelius Square (55 Bayly Street West).
“Having the support of my hometown during the World Cup was a special feeling I will remember forever. Big thanks to the Town of Ajax and Medallion for organizing the watch parties and naming the square in my honour. I can’t wait to visit the square and give back to the community that has given me so much. See everyone on Sunday!” said Cornelius.
“Derek has inspired our community through his hard work, perseverance and commitment to excellence. His journey from Ajax to representing Canada on the world stage is a source of tremendous pride for our residents. We are thrilled to welcome him home and invite the community to join us in celebrating one of Ajax’s own,” added Mayor Shaun Collier.

- Derek Cornelius was born and raised in Ajax and began his soccer journey with Ajax Soccer Club.
- Cornelius has represented Canada at the international level, including the FIFA World Cup and Concacaf competitions, and currently plays professionally in Europe.
- During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ajax Council temporarily renamed Pat Bayly Square to Derek Cornelius Square in recognition of his achievements and contributions to Canadian soccer.
- Parking at Derek Cornelius Square is limited. Additional parking is available at the Ajax Community Centre (75 Centennial Rd.), a short walk from the event.
