Car break-ins in Durham conservation areas

Durham Regional Police investigators are advising users of local conservation areas and walking trails that multiple car break-ins have been reported.

Incidents are occurring in multiple locations across Durham Region and began increasing in frequency since August. Investigators are asking users of these locations to report any suspicious activity, especially if their vehicle has been entered in public parking lots.

The suspect(s) are targeting unoccupied vehicles and will even smash a window to gain entry while the owner is away using the trail system. Once inside, the suspects are stealing purses and wallets.

Stolen bank cards are later used to withdraw funds from nearby automated banking machines. Even citizens who have removed valuables from plain sight inside the vehicle have had their vehicles broken into.

Some of the nature areas targeted include: Ganaraska Forest, Durham Forest, Stephen’s Gulch, Heber Downs, Orono Crown Lands and Seaton Trails.

Anyone with information as to the suspect(s) involved is asked to contact D/Cst. Bycok of the East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1605 or email bycok@drps.ca.
