Clarington man caught for renovation fraud

A Clarington resident faces numerous charges after a fraud investigation in relation to home renovations.

Investigators from the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit commenced a fraud investigation, in July 2020, after receiving reports of a suspect who was taking deposits for jobs that were not completed. The suspect, who operated the business “Provincial Site Services”, went door to door, offering to complete jobs and taking deposits. The suspect would either take the deposit and not return, or initiate the work but not complete the job. The suspect closed the business down several months ago, said a police statement.

At this time, there are 14 victims who have suffered a combined loss of approximately $90,000. The Financial Crimes Unit would like to ensure there are no other victims.

Steven Gamsby, age 56, of Oban Court in Clarington is charged with: Fraud Over $5,000 x4; Fraud Under $5,000 x9; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 x4; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 x9 and Personation. He was released on an Undertaking.
