What’s wrong with lighting at the claimed Greater Toronto Area’s only dog activity area park?
The Dunmoore Dog Park on Whites Road South in Pickering, was closed since July for the installation of new lighting, which was estimated to take a few weeks. Now it is the end of September and the new projected work completion date is October 9.
The City of Pickering on Monday announced that the entirety of the dog park will be temporarily closed in Dunmoore Park for the installation of new lighting.
It gave the duration as from Friday September 28th to Friday, October 9th, 2026.
Cites ‘Poor Weather Conditions’
The city offered the excuse that “the reopening of Dunmoore Dog Park has been further delayed due to ongoing poor weather and site conditions”.
“Construction work is now expected to resume the week of September 28. We understand that this extended closure is frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for the continued inconvenience,” it said.
“Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work to complete the necessary improvements and reopen the park as soon as conditions allow,” the city added.
Extension After Extension
Since the end of July, the city has been announcing issues with the installation of new lighting forcing closure extension after extension.
On July 24, the City of Pickering advised area residents that the closure of the Dunmoore Dog Park had been extended due to an unexpected manufacture delay.
It projected works to be completed between August 11 to August 28.
On August 13, it sent out another notice of extension, and on August 27, said the entirety of the dog park will be temporarily closed for the installation of new lighting.
The new projected dates were from Friday August 28th to Friday, September 18th.
Canine Activity Area
The two Dunmoore Park leash free areas are fully fenced; one for small dogs and another for all dogs, big and small. The larger leash free area also has a sand pit and a Canine Activity Area for all dogs to enjoy.
The park is home to the GTA’s (and maybe all of Ontario’s) only Canine Activity Area, which comprises 10 individual stations where dogs and owners are given simple but fun challenges to complete together, the city said.
