Cold Weather, Hot Targets: Police warn of car ‘warm-up thefts’

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is reminding residents not to leave vehicles running unattended in driveways, warning that “warm-up thefts can be prevented”.

In January, police received 101 reports of stolen vehicles across the region. Authorities stated that pick-up trucks and SUVs continue to be the primary targets.

A recent increase in vehicle thefts has been reported in the Whitby and Brooklin areas. Police highlighted that Toyotas, particularly trucks, are being frequently targeted. Authorities urge residents to take safety measures, remain aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious vehicles. Security cameras are recommended as a deterrent.

Police noted that while this represents a slight decrease compared to last year and a 16 per cent drop from 2023, vehicle theft remains a concern across the province. Officials advise that while no method guarantees protection, taking precautions can help reduce the risk.
