Complaint received about Newtonville road project

Region of Durham yesterday announced that regional staff were notified on Thursday, through Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) of a complaint regarding the Newtonville Road (Regional Road 18) Rehabilitation Project, in Clarington.

As a result, the region has instructed the contractor to defer paving this project until further investigation. The nature of the complaint was not revealed.

The region said the MECP is working with regional staff to investigate the composition of the material being used. The sorting process used for some of the material incorporated into this section of road is being reviewed in cooperation with the MECP.

It said an update will be provided when more information is available.

Road rehabilitation is from 0.35 kilometres south of Concession Road 5 to 0.8 kilometres south of Concession Road 6. Work consists of pulverizing asphalt, culvert replacements, steel beam guide rail, granular A road base, hot mix paving, shouldering, and pavement markings. Recycled waste materials will be used in the Regional Road 18 Pilot Reconstruction Project in Clarington.
