DDSB inquiry into disruption at school Pride flag raising

Durham District School Board (DDSB) is reportedly investigating a disruption at the Pride flag raising ceremony at a school in Ajax on May 17.

“I’m saddened to hear of the disruptive actions that took place during the raising of the Pride flag at @BondarPSAjax,” said Town Mayor Shaun Collier.

He said DDSB is investigating the incident. DDSB did not issue any statement.

“The raising of the Pride flag at Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School should have been empowering for students,” pointed out Mayor Collier. “I’m saddened to hear of the disruptive actions that took place at the event.”

He said the Town of Ajax strives to create an inclusive environment for all residents and will continue to stand up and fight all forms of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia for generations to come.

“Ajax Council looks forward to recognizing and celebrating the 2SLGBTQIA+ community with Pride month activities in June, including participating in the Pride Durham parade in Ajax on June 5,” said Mayor Collier.

“Council would also be honored to join the students of Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School at a future flag raising to show our collective support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ plus community,” he added.

Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School serves some 210 students in grades K-8.
