December covid death toll rises to 50

Durham Health yesterday added four new Covid-19 deaths bringing the month’s death count to 50. In November, the region witnessed five covid deaths.

The overall toll now stands at 237, of which 201 were in long term care homes (LTCH).

Three of the new deaths were in Oshawa [two in LTCH] and one in Whitby LTCH.

Durham Health reported 92 new Covid-19 cases for December 23 bringing the region’s tally to 6,653 since the count began on February 29. Another 82 cases are under investigation.

Recoveries stand at5,527, up by 52. There were 889 active covid cases.

According to Durham Health, there were:

  • 15 new cases in Pickering
  • 29 in Ajax
  • 18 in Whitby
  • Seven in Oshawa
  • 11 in Clarington, and
  • One each in Uxbridge and Scugog

Thirty-three cases are hospitalized with seven in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 866 people in home isolation.

Durham Health reported the highest number of cases so far at 1,919 in Ajax.

Death Toll:

Of the 90 reported deaths in Pickering, 86 were in LTCH
Of the 42 reported deaths in Ajax, 33 were in LTCH
Thirty-four deaths were reported in Whitby, 29 in LTCH
Of the 42 reported deaths in Oshawa, 33 were in LTCH
Eight deaths were reported in Clarington [none in LTCH]
21 deaths were reported in Uxbridge, 20 in LTCH
No deaths have been reported in Scugog
No deaths have been reported in Brock
