Driver Alert: Durham Police get auto plate readers

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) announced is leveraging technology to enhance roadway safety with Automated Licence Plate Readers (ALPR).

These have been deployed beginning Friday, May 12.

As a result of a ministry grant, DRPS will be implementing ALPR Systems on a total of 89 police vehicles with the expected completion date of December 2023.

As of March 13, licence plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a licence plate sticker for vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds was eliminated, a police statement pointed out.

It said in an effort to support police services and help mitigate road and officer safety risks associated with the elimination of the stickers, the government is investing in ALPR technology to improve public safety and strengthen roadside law enforcement efforts across the province.

  1. So the Ford government gets the positive publicity for having saved us having to pay for licence stickers, but we have to pay through our taxes for this new technology, plus the cops have to spend a lot of extra time operating the app, when they have far more important things to do. It’s a political scam.
