Durham Hero: Quick-thinking officer saves man’s life

Heroic efforts by a DRPS officer saved a man’s life in Oshawa, according to a video statement released by the police yesterday.

On Friday March 18th, A/Sgt James O’Hearn arrived at a medical distress call at the intersection of Richmond and Ontario streets in Oshawa. A vehicle sat idling in the middle of the intersection with an unresponsive man inside.

The officer saw an elderly male driver slumped over in the driver seat of the vehicle. The man was bleeding from his head and there was vomit on his mouth.

The officer saw the man’s car was still in drive so he positioned his own vehicle in front of the man’s vehicle before he smashed the window and pulled the man out. After that, the officer started CPR. Not only did he get a pulse, but he noticed he had dislodged a piece of food from the man’s mouth.

It turns out the man had choked on a piece before losing consciousness behind the wheel in the car. Paramedics said the man may have died were not for the officer.
