Durham reminds residents about Christmas tree collection

When the holidays are over, Durham Region will provide its annual curbside collection of natural Christmas trees, which will be composted with leaf and yard waste.

When and where:

  • Ajax and Pickering: Natural Christmas tree collection will be on regular collection days during the weeks of January 6 and 13 only.
  • Brock, Clarington, Scugog and Uxbridge: Natural Christmas tree collection will take place on Monday, January 6 and Monday, January 13 only.
  • Oshawa and Whitby: Residents should refer to their municipal waste collection calendar or app for their scheduled collection date or contact their local area municipality for more information.

Unfavourable weather conditions may delay collection; leave natural Christmas trees out for collection on your scheduled date, said the region.

It asked residents to note the following curbside set out specifications:

  • All tinsel, decorations, wire, plastic bags, lights, tree skirts, nails and stands must be removed from the tree.
  • Trees must be set out by 7 am on your collection day, but no earlier than 7 pm the evening before your collection day.
  • Trees set out in plastic bags will not be collected.
  • Trees exceeding three metres (10 feet) must be cut in half for collection.
  • Please ensure trees are not buried in snowbanks or frozen to the ground. Trees that are frozen to the ground or buried in snowbanks will not be collected.
  • Do not place Christmas trees on top of, or behind snowbanks – ensure the tree is fully accessible for collection.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for weekly reminders and service alerts by downloading the Durham Region Waste App or visiting durham.ca/waste.
