Explosives unit defuses suspicious package at plaza

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said a suspicious package forced the evacuation of a commercial plaza in Whitby.

The package was rendered safe a couple of hours later.

Suspicious Package – officers are evacuating a commercial area near Thickson Road and Wentworth Street in Whitby for a suspicious item, said an earlier police tweet.

“Our Explosive Disposal Unit has been called out. Please avoid the area until it’s deemed safe. More info to follow when it becomes available,” it added.

Later, another tweet said “the suspicious package has been rendered safe by our Explosive Disposal Unit, and the investigation is still ongoing”.

Police said the roadways are now open except for Scotia Crt. Anyone in the area of the call are safe to resume commuting in the area. Thanks for your patience.

No further details were released till late last night.
