Fire deceased person’s identity is not yet known: police

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said the identity of the person deceased in the March 6 fire in downtown Bowmanville is as yet unknown.

“The person’s identity is not yet known,” said a brief police statement in response to an inquiry by Durham Post yesterday. Durham Police did not provide any further details.

There has been speculation on social media about the identity of the sole fatality, in which some 35 others were displaced.

Some reports said the victim was a woman, and even a GoFundMe is said to have been started to raise funds for her funeral.

On Sunday, the Municipality of Clarington announced that the Ontario Fire Marshal has ended the investigation into the fire, and that the buildings have been handed over to the owners.

But following yesterday’s police statement, there is still no official word on the deceased’s gender, identity and cause of death or about the cause of the deadly fire.

Meanwhile, it is believed that the investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal into the Oshawa fire that led to the deaths of a mother and daughter, is still ongoing.
