At 8:08 am on Wednesday, March 12, Oshawa Fire Services dispatchers received multiple calls reporting a house fire at 70 McGrigor Street. According to Oshawa Fire Services, fire crews arrived on scene within minutes and encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions.
Authorities report that a 46-year-old female and a 9-year-old child have died after being removed from the home by firefighters. A 56-year-old male and a 12-year-old child remain in hospital in life-threatening condition. Four victims were initially transported to the hospital, and the extent of their injuries had not been confirmed at the time of the report.
Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter has issued a statement regarding the incident.
“We are profoundly saddened by this heartbreaking tragedy. On behalf of City Council and the City of Oshawa, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the family during this incredibly difficult time. It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the loss of a mother and one child who have succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts are with the father and another child who were transported to hospitals with life-threatening injuries. We are grateful to our first responders, including our dedicated fire crews, police officers and paramedics for their courageous efforts. Our thoughts are also with the six police officers who were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.”
